Reflections on John 1:1-5

John 1:1-5

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.  All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.  In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1)

Jesus is God. From the very beginning we that Jesus is established as Deity. He’s not simply a teacher we like or a philosopher that we agree with; He is God. If I view him as a teacher or a philosopher, then I decide which of his teachings I do I and do not agree with. If I view him as God, I willingly resign my preferences in acknowledgement of his authority and lordship.

“He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made” (John 1:2)

Jesus is creative. Every thing—from the cosmos, to the creatures, to humanity itself— finds its origin in him; nothing that exists was outside his hand. Our God is a creative God. We can see Him and his majesty in his handiwork.

“In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:4-5)

Jesus is different. Jesus is the source of life, which is the light of all mankind. Consequently, he doesn’t blend in but rather stands in stark contrast with the temporal. Light, even the smallest source of it, cannot be ignored or overlooked in a sea of darkness; the contrast is too vast to go unnoticed. Likewise, Jesus did not blend in and go unnoticed.
